The Perfect Skin Routine Starts In the Gut
Your skin is many things. It’s part of your immune system, it’s your outer layer of protection, it’s the largest organ of your body, and it’s a large contributor to your outer beauty. It’s safe to say that we are all seeking that beautiful, healthy outer glow.
Believe it or not, that outer glow starts on the inside, in your gut. Over 70 percent of your immune system and the trillions of bacteria that make up your microbiome are found in your gut. Your gut is your internal line of defense and is taking on daily battles to keep you free from illness and keep toxins at bay.
As you could imagine, this is a messy job that creates some waste. Well, someone or rather something (an organ) needs to clean up this mess. That’s where your skin comes in, working to eliminate the waste that is a result of these battles. Through this process, the bacteria and bacteria byproducts create the gut-skin connection.
Your bacteria and bacterial byproducts are connected with your immune system, endocrine system, and metabolism. So, when something goes awry or those systems aren’t working as they should, it can impact your wellbeing and typically shows itself as a skin issue like a rash, blemish, or breakout.
So, that begs the question, how exactly do we support our skin and this beautiful outer glow?
Ditch the fake foods (chips, candy, ice cream…) and focus on consuming a diet rich in whole foods, foods that haven’t been processed or have been minimally processed (legumes, nuts, seeds, fruits, veggies, meat and so on…).
2. Hydrate with high-quality H20.
Shoot for at least half of your body weight in ounces per day, our bodies depend on quality hydration. (So, if you weigh 150 lbs, then shoot for 75 ounces of water per day.) Water helps keep the skin nice, supple, and flexible. In addition to that, it helps your gut with its elimination process.
3. Replenish digestive enzymes
Supplement with digestive enzymes daily. Enzymes help us break down and assimilate the foods we eat. In other words, they help convert those whole foods we are consuming into materials necessary to nourish the skin and run the body.
4. Rebuild friendly bacteria.
Supplement with probiotics daily. These friendly bacteria help keep us healthy in more ways than one. And, as we discussed, help maintain this important gut-skin connection.
